The WEEE Directive is designed to raise the level of recycling of electrical and electronic equipment and hence reduce the amount being disposed of in landfill sites. It makes the “producer” responsible for the cost of and the logistics for the environmentally safe disposal of all products delivered on or after 13th August 2005, and also for those products delivered before 13th August 2005 providing the end user is purchasing a new similar product.
All products delivered post 13 August 2005 are marked with the “crossed out wheeled bin” symbol in accordance with European Standard EN 50419:2005.
If the product manufacturer is not resident in a particular Member State then the “producer” is the organization importing the product.
